Species: GOYAZITE Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1 mm rhombic goyazite crystal with stippled surface on quartz Field Collected: Jim Nizamoff (2012) Catalog No.: TBC Notes: These goyazite crystals were found in a hydrothermal quartz fracture zone. Goyazite confirmed by EDS analysis. |
| Species: APATITE Locality: Ham Weeks Mine, Wakefield, NH Specimen Size: 5.5 cm specimen of massive gray apatite, two views: daylight and short wave UV. Field Collected: Don Swenson. Catalog No.: TBC Notes: EDS analysis identified the species as apatite, but did not differentiate apatite-CaF vs. apatite-CaOH. Massive apatite such as this is easily overlooked on the mine dumps. Bright yellow fluorescence observed with short-wave UV as shown in second photo |

Species: ZIRCON Locality: Palermo #2 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1 mm red-brown zircon crystal. Field Collected: Found embedded in gormanite rock sample given by Jim Nizamoff Catalog No.: TBC Notes: This zircon does not fluoresce. |

Species: ZIRCON Locality: G.F. Smith Mine, Newport, NH Specimen Size: 6 mm red-brown zircon crystal. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: TBC Notes: This zircon fluoresces weekly yellow. |

Species: MAGNETITE Locality: Founders Way residential construction site, Amherst, NH Specimen Size: 4 cm specimen view with embedded 3 cm magnetite crystal Field Collected: Tom Mortimer (2012) Catalog No.: TBC Notes: |

Species: GOETHITE - Limonite Locality: Madison Lead Mine, Madison, NH Specimen Size: 8 mm field of view. Vug with red-brown crust of limonite on galena. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No:: TBC Notes: I thought this specimen was a strong candidate for the lead oxide species minium. Phillip Morrill lists minium from the Madison Mine. However an EDS analysis showed only a trace of lead (Pb) and mostly iron (Fe). My collecting friend Bob Wilken said, "It contained a minimum of minium." Perhaps minium does occurr at the Madison Mine, however the author is not aware of any confirmed specimen. Also unknown is the degree of analysis done by Phillip Morrill and his associates in making the claim minium is present at the Madison Mine. Visually this specimen with an ocher crust on a galena substrate could be mistaken for minium. |

Species: TALC Locality: Soapstone Quarry, Canterbury, NH Specimen Size: 9 cm specimen of talc-soapstone Field Collected: Tom Mortimer (2012) Catalog No.: Notes: Analysis by D. R. Nielson (in her 1974 Dartmouth doctoral thesis Metamorphic Diffusion in New Hampshire: Soapstone Bodies & Flecky Gneisses) of soapstone from the Canterbury, NH indicates some samples contain as much as 60% of the mineral talc. The major remaining component is chlorite. This sample came from the same approximate area as Dr. Nielson's. The sample is easily scratched with the fingernail. |

Species: TALC Locality: Soapstone Quarry, Canterbury, NH Specimen Size: 2.5 cm specimen of talc Field Collected: Tom Mortimer (2012) Catalog No.: TBC Notes: This sample is very soft. It is likely almost pure talc, |
